Congressional Champions
The success of the ServeNext Presidential Pledge campaign, which was endorsed by more than half the field of major candidates from both parties, prompted leaders to suggest an increase in the number of AmeriCorps members in the ServeNext Congressional Pledge. Both the House Pledge to Expand National Service or the Senate Pledge to Expand National Service match the vision for 250,000 AmeriCorps members, as outlined by both presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain.
As of September 17, 2008, the following candidates from both parties have signed the Congressional Pledge to Expand National Service:
Candidates signing the ServeNext Congressional Pledge are committed:
-
To join the National Service Congressional Caucus.
- To support legislation and funding to expand annual AmeriCorps slots to 250,000 – an increase of 175,000 annual members.
- To support National Service policy that encourages and provides opportunities for Americans to commit at least 4,000 hours – the equivalent of two years over the course of their lives – to the service of others.
- To support expansion of service-learning programs in America’s education system through Learn & Serve America.
- To support funding for the expansion of the Peace Corps.
- To support expansion of Senior Corps and other policies that increase service opportunities for Americans 55 years and older.
- To post their National Service platform on their campaign website.
A pledge was mailed to every Congressional candidate during the first week in August 2008.
