The Salt Lake Tribune reports, “Republican National Convention: Some delegates prefer service projects.”  On Tuesday some delegates found themselves pulling weeds, and others packing emergency kits of toothbrushes, combs, deodorant and other hygiene items for evacuees of Hurricane Gustav.  The Republicans organized several community service projects around Minnesota as a way for the delagates to give back to the host city.

The One Campaign organized a community service project that was attended by First Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain. Delegates at the One Campaign Service Project, “packed 2,500 kits, all with simple but essentials supplies like flashlights, wash clothes and basic drugstore medications, to be given out to AIDS caregivers around the world.”

These service projects were followed by Tueday nights official program events that were all centered around “Service.”  Service seems to be one of the few areas where Republicans and Democrats agree. ServeNext is happy to see First Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain leading on service.

It was truly a memorable experience to see firsthand how we can put aside our political differences aside and focus on serving and putting our country first, in times of peace and war. Attendees of the RNC happily heeded McCain’s call to put our country first and asked us to roll up our sleeves and make calls, care packages, and other service items to those in the hurricane areas. On Monday, instead of celebrating the first day of the Convention, John and Cindy McCain and Laura Bush asked us to make fundraising calls for those affected by the hurricane. Within our first hour, we secured over a million dollars to various charities. Our service didn’t stop there: the next day, we did more service projects, including the ONE Campaign’s service project. It was great to see so many of the attendees pitching in and serving a cause greater than self.
