From Craig Robinson’s introduction of his sister, Michelle Obama, at tonight’s Democratic National Convention:

My sister always talked about who was getting picked on at school, or who was having a tough time at home.

I didn’t realize it then – but I realize it now – those were the people she was going to dedicate her life to: the people who were struggling with life’s challenges.

She has continued to follow that passion. She gave up a job in a big law firm to work in her community. With a group called Public Allies, she trained a new generation of community leaders.

She developed the University of Chicago’s community service center – connecting the university to the neighborhood that was blocks away – but often worlds away – from its gates.

From Michelle Obama’s headline speech at tonight’s Democratic National Convention in Denver:

That is why I love this country.  And in my own life, in my own small way, I’ve tried to give back to this country that has given me so much. That’s why I left a job at a law firm for a career in public service, working to empower young people to volunteer in their communities. Because I believe that each of us – no matter what our age or background or walk of life – each of us has something to contribute to the life of this nation.
