U.S. Senator Barack Obama was caught by an AP photographer wearing a hat adorning the logo of City Year while golfing on vacation in Hawaii over the weekend.

City Year is an AmeriCorps program uniting diverse 17-24 year olds for a challenging year of full-time service to youth in 18 communities across the country – including Obama’s home of Chicago.  City Year’s logo embodies the ideals and values that form the foundation of the organization.  The lettering style honors the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s, an historic predecessor of the modern national service movement in America.

Political junkies and national service supporters may remember President-elect Bill Clinton wearing a City Year sweatshirt while jogging, which was given to him by alum Stephen Spaloss (1991) on a visit to City Year in Boston during the ‘92 Presidential campaign.

Chicago was also the location of Senator McCain’s 2001 appearance at City Year’s annual convention, where he was recognized for his national service leadership with one of City Year’s highest honors – a trademark red jacket: http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/010712/cityyear.shtml.

Also on stage with the Senator is Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year and a leader of the ServiceNation Campaign that McCain has agreed to attend and where we look forward to hearing specifics on his service platform.
