Congressman John Tierney, serving his 6th term representing Massachusetts’s Sixth District, has joined the ServeNext’s Pledge to Expand National Service on July 11, 2008.
Known for being an active leader on education and labor issues in office (including authoring legislation to make college more affordable for all students), Tierney’s commitment of service has been acknowledged by many Americans. He is the only member from Massachusetts on the Education and Labor Committee, serving on the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness and the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions.
By signing the pledge, he promises to support expansion of service-learning programs in America’s education system through Learn & Serve America. Service-learning allows students of all ages to learn about real world issues while discovering how to make a genuine difference in their communities.
Tierney even added his own tidbit to the pledge. He extended his promise of posting his national service platform on his campaign website by adding, “Make sure it is developed, updated and put online.”
With a record like his of commitment and service, let us hope that he will take the opportunity to spend time AmeriCorps members while on the campaign trail to expand this promise for expansion of national service.
ServeNext is a non-partisan, grassroots constituency of national service alumni and supporters that advocates for expansion of national service programs. The ServeNext Pledge to Expand National Service helps to ensure that AmeriCorps and other service programs continue to play an important role in addressing the country’s most critical challenges while renewing a spirit of citizenship and patriotism in America.
